DOWNLOADS
Introduction MSI (or MicroSoft Installer) is the technology that Microsoft recommends be employed to install software onto a Windows PC. While the technology is generally very robust, it can on occasion get "stuck" thinking that an application is installed when in fact, it is not. Moreover, attempting to uninstall that application will not correct the issue, since the application is not really installed. This utility removes all traces of the MSI database and data files for Terrain Navigator (Standard, Pro, and Network Editions.) Once this is done, a reinstall of Terrain Navigator through MSI can take place, since the old traces of the invalid installation are no longer able to interfere with the process. Note: Because this utility performs many searches for files and data entries in the system registry, it is not recommended that this utility be used unless specifically directed by a member of the MyTopo customer service staff. While there should be no harm caused in running this utility (even when Terrain Navigator has never been installed on the PC), it may have unexpected consequences and may cause other applications to function erratically. Please use this utility with caution - MyTopo makes no warranty for the suitability or results of these actions. However, no MyTopo customer has, to date, reported any difficulty with the Kill MSI utility. Removals Performed The removals are broken into three sub-groups. Generally speaking, all three groups should be run. However, you may be directed to perform only one or two of these removals by the MyTopo support representative. Remove MSI/Installer registry keys and data files When this option is selected, the following removals are performed. These are done for all editions of Terrain Navigator: Terrain Navigator Standard Edition, Terrain Navigator Pro, and Terrain Navigator Pro Network Edition. - Application is removed from Uninstall list (Add/Remove Programs) - MSI Data file(s) for application are removed from Windows directories - MSI LocalPackage file(s) for application are removed from user directories - Application entries are removed from Installer Components registry database - Application entries are removed from Products, Features, and UpgradeCodes registry database - Application entries are removed from ARPCache, Folders, and MUICache registry database Remove US Streets Module self-registering DLL registry keys When this option is selected, removal of the registry keys used by the US Streets Module plug in for Terrain Navigator Pro will take place. If you do not have the US Streets Module, there is no need to perform this removal. Note that if you do have the US Streets Module, you will need to reinstall it before it can be used with Terrain Navigator Pro again. Specifically, these registry keys are removed from HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT: - All entries for StreetsAndRoutingSDK, SMMobile, and SMGeocoder - All entries for smgeocode.dll, smmobile.dll, and srsdk.dll Remove files in system Temp folders This repair seeks out the various locations used for temporary system files and deletes any file or directory not currently in-use. Temporary files can usually be safely deleted, and are usually removed during normal system maintenance. However, excessive unused temporary files can cause MSI to fail to start, or produce an unexplained error. Specifically, the following folders will be cleaned: - As defined by the 'TEMP' environment variable. - As defined by the 'TMP' environment variable. - C:\Windows\Temp\ (or equivalent) if present. Note that since Kill MSI is run as an 'Administrator' process, it will remove the Temp files under the Administrator account. This is appropriate, since installers (like MSI) must also be run as Administrator - and use the Administrator's Temp files and directories. Program Revisions 06/13/10 - 1.0 Release (for internal use only) 07/29/10 - 2.0 Release 09/03/10 - 2.01 Release (minor bug fixed.) 09/29/10 - 2.02 Release (improved compatibility with Win7\Vista.) 02/10/11 - 2.03 Release (minor bug fixed.) 11/08/11 - 2.04 Release (with updated digital signature.) 12/16/11 - 2.05 Release (minor bug fixed.) 01/02/13 - 9.2 Release (minor bug fixed, reworked version numbers) How To Install Click the link below. In most instances, your web browser will ask if the file should be Opened, or Saved to your computer. Choose Save, then select a location to Save the downloaded file In. If you are unfamiliar with downloading files from the Internet, we recommend choosing your "Desktop"; select Save In, Desktop and press Save. Once the download completes, double-click the downloaded application that appears on your Desktop. This will run the Kill MSI application. Once the removal of the MSI files has been completed, you may run the Terrain Navigator Setup application and (once working) delete the download from your Desktop. Please note: Do NOT save this utility in the same folder as your existing copy of Terrain Navigator or Setup application. Doing so will corrupt your installation, requiring a complete re-install to correct.
