Software update for versions 8.x or later.
This download contains all the latest features and compatibility fixes; updating Terrain Navigator Standard Edition to version 8.71. We have made many improvements to the software that we hope you will enjoy. Note that version 8.71 is the final release of Terrain Navigator Standard Edition.
This update is NOT for use with Terrain Navigator Pro, or Terrain Navigator Pro Network Edition. Click here for the 9.1 update for Terrain Navigator Pro, and here for the 9.1 update for Terrain Navigator Pro Network Edition.
What Version of Terrain Navigator do I have, and will this download/update work for me?
There have been many editions and versions of Terrain Navigator over the last 16+ years. However, this update is only available to those customers who have purchased Terrain Navigator since March 2009. While we have attempted to make this update compatible with as many discs as possible, very early editions of Terrain Navigator (and its predecessors, TopoScout and G-REF) may not be compatible.
Those with versions of Terrain Navigator sold prior to 2009 (software version 7.03 or earlier) are invited to upgrade to Terrain Navigator Pro, which is fully compatible with Windows 7, and contains many new features. We are pleased to offer a significant discount for this upgrade. For details, please call us at 877-587-9004.
Discs in the 'National Park Digital Guide', 'Appalachian Trail Digital Guide', and 'Take A Hike' series are not compatible with version 8.71 of Terrain Navigator Standard Edition. Unfortunately, updates for these discontinued products are no longer available.
If you're not sure what you have, or have any questions, please feel free to call us at 877-587-9004 and we'll be happy to sort through the various upgrade options with you.
Can I get this update along with updated maps on DVD?
Yes - as part of Terrain Navigator Pro.
Please call us at 877-587-9004 and explain that you are a Terrain Navigator customer who would like to trade up to Terrain Navigator Pro on DVD. Terrain Navigator Pro is available for each state (or region for Mid Atlantic or New England) at a very low price - if you are interested, please give us a call at 877-587-9004. (This offer is only available to existing Terrain Navigator customers who call us.)
Applying the 8.71 Update
If you have a version of Terrain Navigator sold after March 2009 (versions 8.51, 8.6, and 8.7) and do not wish to upgrade to Terrain Navigator Pro, you are welcome to apply this 8.71 update. This download will also install onto new PCs, replacing Installer discs that are unable to run on Windows 7.
Step 1: Log into your Registration account
Click the Registration link (here, or at the top of this page) and log into your MyTopo (formerly Maptech) account. Your account was created automatically when you installed Terrain Navigator 8.x. Use the email address you provided when you originally installed version 8 to log in. If you have never set a password, click the 'get it' link to have one emailed to you. Once logged in, click the link 'Go to account and downloads' to find the link in your account to download Terrain Navigator 8.71.
If you are unable to access your Registration account, please call us at 877-587-9004.
Step 2: Download Version 8.71
Click the Download Terrain Navigator Standard Edition 8.71 link in your Registration account. In most instances, your web browser will ask if the file should be Opened, or Saved to your computer. Choose Save, then select a location to Save the downloaded file In. If you are unfamiliar with downloading and applying software patches, we recommend choosing your "Desktop"; select Save In, Desktop and press Save. Once the download completes, double-click the downloaded application that appears on your Desktop. (You need not uninstall the previous version before installing this update.) This will apply the download to your Terrain Navigator installation. Once that process is completed, you may run Terrain Navigator and (once working) delete the download from your Desktop.
Please note: Do NOT save this update in the same folder as your existing Terrain Navigator application. Doing so may corrupt your installation, requiring a complete re-install to correct.
Step 3: Apply the Update
After completing your backups, double-click the downloaded application that appears on your Desktop (or location otherwise specified when the update was downloaded.) This will apply the download to your existing copy of Terrain Navigator Standard Edition – or install fresh, if this is an installation on a new PC. Once that process is completed, you may delete the download from your Desktop.
Step 4: Install your State Discs
When updating an existing installation, you may be presented with the option to Configure a new state CD. If all of your states are already installed and configured, press "Skip State Configuration" to complete the upgrade process.
As a convenience for those customers who may be using this opportunity to install Terrain Navigator on a new PC (such as one running the Windows 7 x64-bit operating system) this update will install in "Demo Mode" if an existing installation is not found. Press the Install Map CD button (or choose New Map CD Setup from the File Menu) to configure your state(s) in Terrain Navigator. (Note: the USGS Topographic Series CDs will be required to complete the installation.)
What's New in Terrain Navigator 8.71
We've been hard at work adding new features and correcting minor incompatibilities. Here are some of the highlights.
Maps and photos can now be transferred to certain Garmin GPS units.
The Colorado, Oregon, Dakota, and GPSmap 62 series GPSs support custom 'KMZ' maps. Terrain Navigator can now generate these maps automatically, and transfer them to compatible GPSs. We've even added a special 'Manage Maps' window to allow easy access to maps you've created with Terrain Navigator and wish to store on the GPS.
Note that a firmware update (available free from Garmin) may be required to view the maps on the GPS.
Map Printing and Publishing now features a revolutionary new print layout system that easily allows full control over the printed page. A fully interactive print preview is the heart of this new design. Moreover, version 8.6's print layout also functions in saving the maps as BMP, TIFF, and JPG image files. Publishing maps for inclusion in reports, emails, and presentations has never been easier.
Quick Print has been redone so to provide a one-click shortcut to your most common printing task.
Use any font character as a Marker Symbol
The ability to use any font on the PC as a symbol for markers and waypoints is now available. This feature was formerly reserved for those with the Emergency Management Symbol Pack.
Printing to an exported image now includes an addional Export Format: .KMZ.
Terrain Navigator is now compatible with Google Earth version 5.1.
Note that Maptech titles in the National Park Digital Guide, Appalachian Trail Digital Guide, and Take A Hike series are not compatible with version 8.71.
Those with Maptech USGS Topographic Series and Maptech US Terrain Series CDs sold prior to March 2009 that have not been previously upgraded to version 8.51 or later (via a purchased upgrade Installer DVD) are not entitled to this upgrade.
In any of these cases, please call us at 877-587-9004 and we will be happy to offer you a special discount to upgrade to our current product offering, version 9.1 of Terrain Navigator Pro.
Why am I being asked to log into an account to download this update?
Starting with version 8.6 of Terrain Navigator Standard Edition, we are asking customers to log into their account before downloading any updates. While the updates remain free, and creating an account is simple, this process allows us to better serve you with frequent updates and new features.
