The term “Bushwhacking” describes the roughest form of off-road navigation. In Colonial times, adventurers would strike out through the wilderness using only their woodsmanship skills and a simple magnetic compass to guide their way. Today, bushwhacking has become a sport for outdoor enthusiasts. Thanks to modern technology, striking out into the wilderness on their own is no longer a highly dangerous endeavor.

Satellite technology and the hand-held GPS (Global Positioning Satellites)receiver have given bushwhackers even more confidence. Here’s how even novice outdoorspeople can get into this exciting new style of outdoor recreation.
